i picked it from a vendor on colaba causeway last week. it is an imperfect oval in shape. a thin membrane covers the succulent fruit. it is firm on the outside but as you dig in, the juice oozes out. a bit messy but very tasty. i genuinely don't know this fruit's name. please help!

Wow have never seen this before. I would like to know its name too.
Lulu:
It is the kernel of the palmyra tree. It is called nongu or nungu in Tamil. If it is too firm, it is raw. It should not be too soft either. The top and bottom membrane comes out easily when it is just ripe. It is one of my favourite fruits. When I used to visit my grandmother in our village,I would look forward every afternoon to the call "Nongu, nongu" by the fruit vendor carrying the basket containing the nongus on his head. You get them in Matunga as well.
It's called "Tadgola"...have blogged about it..http://thesassyfork.blogspot.in/2011/04/april-fruits-at-dadar-market.html
Tadgola
Sounds absolutely yummy. Lulu, can you compare it's taste to any other fruit?

Missing my tadgolas here in NY!! I am skilled at peeling them without puncturing them, so as to get a mouthful of refreshing juice.
